Founded by writer and urban policy advocate, Alicia Pederson, Ph.D., and sustainable architect Alina Tompert, AIA, Hortus in Urbe is dedicated to bringing resilient, family-friendly urban development to cities nationwide.
Rooted in the Garden City of Chicago, we seek to bring European-style courtyard buildings and perimeter blocks to US cities, helping American municipalities benefit from the time-tested models of safe, resilient, and family-friendly urban living
Alicia Pederson, Ph.D. is a writer, teacher, and urban policy advocate who champions courtyard urbanism as a way to build greener, family-friendly cities. She highlights how this approach can help cities retain families by creating greater housing diversity, green space, and walkable neighborhoods.
Alicia serves as Vice President of the Greater Rockwell Organization and is a member of Strong Towns Chicago and Abundance Illinois. She and her husband have three children who attend elementary school in the Lincoln Square neighborhood.
Alina Tompert, AIA is an architect specialized in sustainability, championing efforts for more resilient, healthy buildings and places through professional advocacy and community engagement work.
Alicia serves as Secretary on the Executive Board of the Climate Action Museum and is a member of the Illinois Green Alliance. She is also a Living Future Accredited (LFA) professional and WELL Accredited Professional passionate about health and wellness in the built environment. Mother of one, she and her husband are raising a child in the Wicker Park neighborhood.
